The Abbey

Our History

As the name suggests, The hotel was originally an Abbey that was frequently used as a place of refuge for the monks who came over from St Michael’s Mount. The Dining Room and reception are over 400 years old and are the sole survivors of the burning of Penzance by the Spanish in the mid 17th Century. The Drawing Room and Rooms 4, 7 and 8 being added to what is currently Rooms 1, 3 and 6 soon after 1840 making the ‘newer additions’ almost two hundred years old.
